The Austrian Association of Literary and Scientific Translators (IG Übersetzerinnen Übersetzer – IGÜ) represents the interests of literary and scientific translators in Austria. Its main goal is to improve the legal, social and economic environment for translators, but also to increase the visibility and appreciation of the profession.
We offer information and advice on all issues relevant to the profession, in particular
copyright law, translation contracts, social and tax matters and career entry. We also organise advanced training and educational events – most notably the annual Austrian Translators’ Seminar – and we present the work of translators to the general public.
Our office is located in the Literaturhaus Vienna. Together with the Association of Authors and the Documentation Center for Modern Austrian Literature, we have been based here since its foundation in 1991. We also have a national and international network in the realm of translation and cultural policy.
The Translators’ Association was established in 1981 already, back then as “Übersetzergemeinschaft,” under the leadership of long-time president Utta Roy-Seifert. At the turn of the millennium, Werner Richter took over the chair.
